House discusses Birsa Munda cuffs

The issue of displaying Bhagwan Birsa Munda in handcuffs was raised in the Assembly on Friday that attracted different opinions. BJP member Anant Ojha while flagging The Pioneer’s copy that had reported about such a display inside a hall of the Assembly itself demanded to take corrective measure.

While Speaker Dinesh Oraon assured that the matter would be looked into, BJP legislator form Gumla Shivshankar Oraon objected to the demand saying that showing Birsa Munda in shackles was related to tribal history and custom. “Who has ordered to remove the handcuffsIJ It has been our history,” he said.

Minister Saryu Roy later clarified the position and said that the decision to remove shackles from the statues of Birsa Munda from across the State was taken in the House itself. “There was a consensus on this issue in the Assembly. There is no difference of opinion on this matter,” he said.
