In a shocking incident, a 45-year-old HIV-positive patient met a tragic end when he jumped from the roof top of the four-storeyed MGM Medical College and Hospital building early on Thursday morning. The patient was undergoing a treatment at the Government-run hospital. The patient was being treated for HIV from the past two years and was also suffering from depression reportedly, and was admitted at the hospital two days ago. The deceased who was an auto-rickshaw driver is survived by two sons, a daughter, and wife.

Superintendent, MGM Medical College and Hospital, RY Chowdhury confirmed that a patient who was admitted in the medicine department in the hospital committed suicide by jumping from the rooftop of the third floor. “We are investigating the incident. The patient who was HIV positive jumped from the hospital building at 5 am today (Thursday). He was rushed to the hospital emergency where the doctors declared him brought dead,” said Chowdhury.

The hospital superintendent said due to his deadly disease, the patient was probably suffering from depression. He said they had immediately informed the police about the incident. A police party arrived at the scene for initial probe and took necessary action. The police however, handed over the body to the family members of the deceased instead of sending it to the MGM Medical College mortuary for post-mortem.

Deputy superintendent of police (city) Animesh Nathani, said that the incident is being investigated. His body has been sent for a post-mortem. Sources in the hospital said the deceased stayed at Fauza Bagaan in Baridih locality and lived with his family. “We are in state of shock to see his tragic end. He had contracted the HIV two years ago and ever since he was undergoing treatment, but of late he had become depressed and wanted to die. He was ashamed of the disease,” said a relative. As soon as the news of an HIV patient’s death spread, panic gripped the premises and a pal of gloom descended at the medical college hospital premises.
