Hi-tech equipment for traffic cops soon

The modernisation drive of traffic police is continuing at a steady pace as the District Traffic Police has made requests for more equipment to ensure a strict traffic discipline on the streets of the capital.

Interestingly, the Traffic department has submitted requests for as many as 20 motorcycles to help them in hot pursuit and speed radar guns to monitor speed of vehicles on city streets.

“We desperately need vehicles as often we become a mute spectator in cases where we need to chase a culprit to catch him,” said Traffic SP Rajeev Ranjan Singh. The total cost for getting radar guns mounted on vehicles comes close to Rs 30 lakh.

“Even if we get one such unit we can use it judiciously for the entire city,” added Traffic SP. However, the Traffic SP rued division of the capital in zones specifying speed limits in each to control the menace of over speeding vehicles.

“It is for the road department to decide speed limit in each zone but they have not done anything on that. Absence of any guideline cripples speed monitoring,” maintained Singh.

Incidentally, the traffic police have been equipped with as many as 5 to 6 breath analysers, around 35 wheel locks, hand gloves, oxygen masks, fluorescent jackets and sticks among other things.
