With complains of adulteration in the food items on the rise, the district health authorities have launched a campaign to tighten the noose around the shopkeepers who indulge in the illegal practice of adulteration to mint easy money.
Following the repeated complaints of adulteration in manufacturing of ice creams forced the East Singhbhum health department raid at a leading distributor agency of ice cream at Bistupur on Monday afternoon.
A health department team led by East Singhbhum civil surgeon Jagat Bhusan Prasad and along with East Singhbhum food inspector Mahesh Pandey raided M/s KIC Enterprises located in Bistupur. The unit was the distributors of the vice ice cream brand manufactured by Adityapur based company and used to sell ice creams to parlours across city.
Jagat Bhusan Prasad said that there have been complaints that units were indulging in using substandard materials in preparing ice creams during summer season to make profit.
“We inspected the place and have collected samples of two varieties of popular ice creams from the unit and would be sending it for testing to the food testing lab at Ranchi,” said the civil surgeon. He said that during the summers the sale of ice creams has picked up but the quality being served to the people are suspected.
He revealed that the samples taken would all be sent to Ranchi to find out the purity of a product. If any kind of adulteration is found in any of the products then a fine of Rs5lakh can be slapped or three years of rigorous imprisonment can be given under the Food Safety Act.
"The inspection is focussed on such shops that deal with consumer items. On the basis of the report given by the food testing lab we will determine the course of action,” said another official.
The health department has also started conducting raids at the provision stores and confectionery shops to collect the samples of the eatables.
“We will be carrying out similar exercises at distributing agencies of other popular ice cream brands too,” said food inspector Mahesh Pandey.
The health department also carried out raids at a grocery outlet in Chota Govindpur over complaints from locals of worms found inside branded ‘garam masala’ packets.
