HC case prompts EC to put RS polls on hold in State

The Election Commission of India on Thursday postponed the Rajya Sabha elections for the lone seat in the State, slated to take place on June 19. The Commission withdrew the announcement made by it in the light of the Election Petition (EP No. 12 of 2010) pending in Jharkhand High Court against the election of Kanwar Deep Singh for Rajya Sabha, whose resignation caused the vacancy.

According to a press note released by the Election Commission, the bye-election to fill up the vacancy will now be held after the disposal of the said election petition. Former Rajya Sabha MP and state spokesperson of BJP Ajay Maroo also met the Elections Commission in Delhi requesting it to postpone the elections as a petition demanding cancellation of Singh is pending in the Jharkhand High Court.
