Nearly four lakh people surviving on the water sourced from Hatia dam may finally heave a sigh of relief as water from the largest reservoir — Getalsud Dam — will now be gushing out of taps kilometers away from the reservoir. The pipeline project which was started to quench thirst of people dependent on Hatia Dam finally became operational from Monday.

The small project to allay concerns of people and a timely intervention as one may acknowledge before harsh summer begins was inaugurated by Urban Development Minister, CP Singh and Minister of DWSD, Chandra Prakash Chaudhary at Booty More. Ranchi MP, Ram Tahal Chaudhary; Kanke MlA, Jeetu Charan Ram; Mayor, Asha lakra; Deputy Mayor, Sanjeev Vijaywargiya, Secretary DWSD, AP Singh and officials of both the department were present on the occasion.

“I am MlA from last 20 years and I come across this problem almost every day. This pipeline will bring relief to people and work on missing pipeline will also begin soon,” said Singh.

The 17-km long pipeline project that hooks the network maintained by the two reservoirs has been executed by the Drinking Water and Sanitation Department with the help of Urban Development department. The pipeline stretches from Rukka water treatment plant situated at Booty More to Hatia water supply line in Doranda.

“Bringing Water to Hatia has been a challenge for the department however we have succeeded in doing so. Water crisis will be addressed. However, water is scarce and it needs to be spent sparingly,” said Chaudhary adding that “Ranchi is also facing more illegal connections than legal connections so it must this problem must be addressed”.

According to sources, 5MGD of water will be sourced from Rukka dam to take burden off the Hatia reservoir and densely populated localities-- Kantatoli, Sirmatoli, Church Road, Doranda, North Office para, Ashok Nagar, Mecon Colony, Kusai Colony, Risaldar Nagar, Aurobindo Nagar, Birsa Chowk, some parts of Dhurwa and Hatia—.will be directly benefited with Rukka’s water.

Notably, rationing from Hatia Dam started in October, 2015 due to less water in the catchment area of the Dam even as threat of supply getting hit severely in summer became an unavoidable situation. The DWSD and the Urban Development department jointly prepared the programme to provide timely relief to people dependent on Hatia Dam.
