Governor Droupadi Murmu will inaugurate National Khadi Mela at Gopal Maidan on Sunday. Jharkhand State Khadi Board is organising an eight days long Khadi Mela at Gopal Maidan from September 17 to 24.
More than 300 stalls will be put in which buyers can look forward for items like khadi, wood crafts, terracotta, stone crafts, handlooms, jewellery, bamboo craft, metal craft, jute and tribal paintings among other items which will be on display for sale. The products will be available at discount of 25 to 30 per cent.
Addressing a press meet on Saturday, Amit Kumar, deputy commissioner, East Singhbhum said that the exhibition-cum-sale of khadi and village industries products will see the participation of around 300 stalls put up by artisans, craftsmen, khadi institutions and Rural Employment Generation Programme units. Artists from different parts of the country will participate.
The entry ticket for the mela will be Rs 10. However, entry for students coming with uniform will be free.
“We are working hard to promote the rural artisans and craftsmen. Khadi board wants to make the small entrepreneurs and labourers self sufficient,” said Kulwant Singh Bunty, member of the board.
The khadi board, which was formed in 2004, four years after Jharkhand was carved out of Bihar — without capital, infrastructure and even a signage, today has a network of outlets across the state and the country.
“We are confident that people in the city would like the fair. It has been liked by people in the past years and it would be the same this year too. The fair would promote artisans of the state and the country,” said Singh.
