Grand alliance to field minority community leader in 2020 RS polls

The grand alliance in Jharkhand has unanimously decided to field a member of the minority community for the 2020 Rajya Sabha elections in case the community fails to get satisfactory representation in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls this year, members of the alliance said on Sunday.

“All allies of the grand alliance have agreed that we will field a member of the minority community for the 2020 Rajya Sabha elections. Their representation in the upper and the lower houses is very important,” said Ajoy Kumar, President, Jharkhand Pradesh Congress Committee (JPCC).

However, Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) Executive President Hemant Soren’s statement hinted that the leaders from minority community may not get enough opportunities during the General Elections.

“We have to win all the 14 seats. And if any community fails to get enough representation in Lok Sabha polls, we will ensure that the community gets its share of representation in the Rajya Sabha elections,” Soren said.

The grand alliance on Sunday slammed the incumbent Government for creating communal rifts in the country. The Congress, JMM and JVM-P accused the BJP of polarising the people of India for political benefits.

“The UPA has always stood in support of the minority community. Unlike BJP, we do not do Hindu-Muslim politics,” Soren said.

Jharkhand Vikas Morcha-Prajatantrik (JVM-P) chief Babulal Marandi accused the BJP of spewing venom in the society and said that the grand alliance will counter their efforts.

“The BJP is deliberately disturbing peace and harmony of the country. We will not let them do it for long. If we fail to include a member of the minority community in the list of our candidates this time, we will send one of them to Rajya Sabha,” he said.

Meanwhile, Ajoy Kumar said that if any leader from the grand alliance tries to change sides or contest independently, he will immediately lose his membership from the party concerned.

Former Godda MP Furqan Ansari, senior Congress Leader Alamgir Alam and JMM’s Haji Hussain Ansari are among politicians from the minority community who may get a ticket this time.
