Graduate School College for Women, a constituent college of Kolhan University has launched start EXCEl (Employability Excellence with College Education and learning), an ambitious programme to enable students to grab job opportunities.

EXCEl Programme aims at enhancing the employability of students, wherein students will be skilled in management and soft skills and various domains, in addition to their Graduate Degree, through an engaging and practical training methodology that imparts competencies required to work successfully in an interdependent world.

Kolhan University pro vice chancellor, Ranjit Kumar Singh; Kolhan University registrar S.N. Singh; TISS state co-ordinator, A. Anand and principal of Graduate School College for Women Usha Shukla were present at a function held within the college campus today. The college also started enrolment of students for the EXCEl programme.

The EXCEl programme was modeled on the National University Students’ Skill Development Programme (NUSSD), a flagship programme initiated by TISS in 2013. The programme was successfully piloted in 9 states in India and is currently in the second phase where it is being implemented in 120 colleges in 4 states in India. In 2015, the United Nations (UN) Steering Committee on Children and Youth recognised the NUSSD programme as a “Skill Development Best Practice” in the country.

Officials of the college said that the classes will only be started when 100 students will enroll.

Under this scheme, students will get the opportunity to learn new vocational skills through this programme along with their current bachelor’s degree. The purpose is to make these graduates ready for specific skilled employment as well as provide self-employment opportunities.

“Students who do this course will be better placed as this is a job oriented course. They will also be equipped to start their own ventures in small groups,” said a professor.

Expressing similar opinions Soma Das, a student said, “These are the times when wrong planning can spoil your career. We should know the details and the scope of the course we plan to join. I am of the opinion that traditional courses like BA and MA do not help in getting jobs while professional and technical courses provide a lot of avenues”.
