After lifting back to back several international awards in powerlifting and carving a niche in the men dominated sport, power lifter Sujata Bhakat currently posted in Special Branch, Jharkhand police, told The Pioneer about the present status of sports and other facilities available for the sportsperson in Jharkhand. Both Bhakat and her counterpart Bela Ghosh clinched first position in women’s raw push open organised recently at USA. Excerpts of the Interview:
When did you start your journey as a sportsperson and what was the main reason for choosing the sportIJ
I am currently working as an Inspector in Special Branch, my job demands fitness and more than that I was always inclined towards this sport. In 2010, I started taking formal training in power lifting under the guidance of renowned power lifter, Indrajit Singh. After joining gym, I was encouraged to participate in the local programme organised at Dhanbad and after winning the contest of eastern India my journey began as power lifter.
How do you plan your schedule and your workout sessionsIJ
Regular practice is must in this field. I devote four hours regularly at home and practice different techniques. Presently, I am not being mentored by any teacher. I learn different techniques and methods through watching videos on YouTube and other internet sites. The best part is that my mother too guides me and helps me. Being a cop, it is immensely helpful in my profession too.
So far you have participated in how many international eventsIJ
I have represented India in more than seven international events. I have won Asian Gold Medal three consecutive times. Apart this, I have also participated in world police game and other events.
Do you think State Government is doing enough to promote the sportIJ
No not at all, the state government is not serious about sports and neither will be in future. Even meeting officials and writing letters to the sports department, we will feel helpless as officers incharge had already mentioned that power lifting is not listed in the sports list present with the State Government. We often bear the cost of our practice and tours, only few tours are sponsored by corporate firms. Moreover, power lifting is not a very popular sport in state and it has only few takers. Mentors of powerlifting too are also very difficult to get, who can guide the practitioners technically.
You have received more than five international awards. What next, will you continueIJ
Yes, presently both at personnel and professional front, I am getting support and will continue with the sports. There are several barriers and challenges but I will overcome that. After getting recognition at International arena, my confidence level has increased. If provided all assistance and support to the players, they will definitely bring laurels and can further provide training to sports enthusiasts.
