Concerned over the lack of blood banks in State, the Government is mulling to increase the number of blood banks and maintenance of blood banks.

Chief Minister (CM) Hemant Soren inaugurated a blood donation camp organised by The Jharkhand State Aids Control Society and the Health Department on Thursday at the Project Building.

“The Government is paying special attention in the field of health and we are moving in this direction step by step. This blood donation camp is just a beginning in this direction and it is being organised at the highest platform of the State. Efforts are being made by the Government to increase the number of blood banks and the blood storage capacity in the State,” said CM Hemant Soren.

“There is only 25 per cent blood available in the blood banks of the State and the women and children are suffering from diseases like anemia and thalassemia.

The blood bank system in the blocks is not quite good and it needs to be corrected. If we have surplus of blood it can provided to the BPl families for free,” CM added.

There are 45 blood banks in the State out of which 25 blood banks are supported by NACO. The blood storage capacity of the state is 17,200 units and the consumption is around 10,000 units per month. There are only16 blood banks in the district hospitals.

“In this financial year blood banks will be set up in all the districts of Jharkhand,” said Health Minister Rajendra Prasad Singh.

Earlier also the Chief Minister had directed for holding of blood donation camps and appealed youths to come forward for blood donation.

As part of that appeal, camps are being held to create awareness among government employees and others. The purpose behind this awareness is to encourage people to donate blood so that no one in the state dies due to blood deficiency.

Notably the blood donation camp will continued till September 28 at Project Building and on September 30 at Nepal House  respectively.
