Govt may not move court over VC row

After a week of stalemate, deliberations and situation in which all the four VCs appointed by Governor Syed Ahmed took their charges, the Government is mostly likely to drag its confrontational feet.

It is learnt that in order to end the stalemate between Raj Bhawan and the Government the Human Resource Development Department would not move to the court challenging the appointments made.Top sources in the Government confided to The Pioneer that despite sufficient “heartburn” the issue can be considered as settled.“Thing is that the Chief Minister had objected to certain areas (related to the appointment) which were not even considered for discussion. Had the Raj Bhawan discussed those earlier it would have been pretended that the Governor and the Government are working in a coordinated manner. Anyway what has happened has happened. The Government would not go to court,” said an official.

The matter snowballed ever since HRD Minister Geetashree Oraon, invoking tribal card, reacted publicly over the appointments made for four universities of the State and charged the Raj Bhawan for not making proper consultation with the Government before this. But considering doubtful legal outcome in this regard and also sensing the message going out over the open confrontation the Government seems to have mellowed down.

In the meantime, the Congress, a partner in the JMM-led Government, has also intervened. Sources in the party suggest that Pradesh Congress Committee president Sukhdeo Bhagat has had discussed the matter with Chief Minister Hemant Soren.“He reported to have told the CM that the authority of the Governor should not be challenged in the court as it would not send out a healthy message. The matter can be considered as settled,” said a leader privy to the developments.

Nevertheless, the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) is still to receive any file from the HRD in this regard. “No consensus has been built upon the matter (between the CMO and the HRD. The file is yet to come with any recommendation. There may be any development on Monday,” said an official.

At the same time he also clarified that the CMO was not bound to toe the opinion expressed by the HRD and any follow-up step would be taken “depending on ground reality.”
