Girl kills self after scoring less in boards

In a shocking incident, an 18-year-old girl allegedly committed suicide after being scolded by her father for scoring less in Class XII board’s examination.

Officer in-charge of Sukhdeonagar Police Station, Sanjay Kumar informed that the incident took place early morning on Friday when Aditi Kumari, a resident of Indrapuri in Ratu Road, jumped off from an under-construction building in the city.

“The girl committed suicide around 7 am but her body was not spotted for over four hours. It was only after the locals found her body that the matter came to our cognizance,” Kumar said.

The OC informed that the girl was upset about getting less marks in mathematics paper. “The results had come out on Monday and her father Rajesh Kumar, who is a banker in Pune, had scolded her for getting scoring less on Thursday,” he said.

On Friday morning at 6, Aditi along with her younger sister left home to get drinking water on a scooter. However, after going a bit further from the house, she asked her sister to return and tell their mother that she is never coming back.

“The girl had called her mother before jumping off from the roof and informed that she is on top of a high rise building. On getting the call her parents started looking for her in the neighbourhood. When they were unable to trace her till 9 am, they lodged a complaint with the police and we were finally able to find her body using GPS at around 11. The body was sent for postmortem at RIMS,” Kumar said.

The data of National Crime Records Bureau shows that in 2015, a total of 93 students, 63 boys and 30 girls in Jharkhand committed suicide due examination failure.

Psychiatrists claim that the pressure to score well in examinations is leading to students taking such drastic steps. “The parents and teachers need to be careful on how they deal with such cases. Scolding is not an option in today’s world when the child is already reeling under so much or academic and peer pressure. The present education system which has academically burdened the students and pressure from parents is said to reasons for such drastic steps being taken by children,” said Dr. Siddharth Sinha of Ranchi Institute of Neuro Psychiatry and Allied Sciences (RINPAS).
