Garhwa faces lack of veterinary doctors

Published on:

Due to lack of doctors and resources in the Animal Husbandry Department in the district, animal owners  are compelled to treat their animals by quacks. Most of the posts of Veterinary doctors created by the department are vacant and are running in charge. This often leads to the death of sick animals, said locals.

According to reports the number of cattle in the district is around seven lakhs.  But, there are not enough doctors to treat them.  For the treatment of animals, there are 17 first class hospitals in different blocks and a State veterinary dispensary established in the district headquarter.

All posts of eight Block Animal Husbandry Officers are vacant and are running on charge, whereas out of 17 first class veterinary hospitals, only three traveling veterinary doctors are working.

These three traveling veterinary doctors are also in charge of the Block Animal Husbandry Officer. The post of Lower Divisional Animal Husbandry Officer is also running in charge.  Along with this, the post of doctor is also vacant in the poly clinic in district headquarters.

The traveling Veterinary doctors also have the charge of First Class Veterinary Hospital and Block Animal Husbandry Officer.  Because of this, such doctors are busy with administrative work and are not able to devote time to the first class veterinary hospital.  In such a situation, animal owners have to go to Quacks to get treatment for sick animals.  Where they are exploited financially, as well as due to incomplete information, their treatment often leads to the death of animals.

Many animals are not being vaccinated at the government level.  Because of this, cases of disease and death of animals often come to the fore. Preparations are going on for the vaccination of diseases named Khurpka and Mouthpaka i.e. Khurha and Chapka.  Vaccination preparations were made in the month of August itself. But, the vaccination has not started even after a lapse of more than three months.

District Animal Husbandry Officer, Garhwa Dr. Dhaniklal Mandal, said that the vaccine for strangulated disease is not being supplied from the government.  Foot and mouth disease vaccination will start.  All the preparations have been done for it.  We strive to provide the best service with limited resources available.
