Gallons of water go down the drain

Published on:

As the city braces for challenges of water crisis during the summer season, gallons of drinking water is being wasted near Mango Bridge for nearly a week from a public water kiosk. The water is getting wasted as the taps have been stolen by some miscreants. On the request of Jamshedpur East MlA Banna Gupta and in view of the area’s drinking water crisis as the Rs64.18 crore water project was not yet operational, the public water kiosk with nine taps was set up in March 2012 at the Mango-end of the old bridge over Subernarekha river.

Sources informed that miscreants have stolen almost all the nine taps from the kiosks. Due to this, water is getting wasted every day. Mango Vikas Samity member and a resident of Mango, Surendra Pandey expressed anguish over the water loss. “We are surprised that the Mango water project is yet to be fully completed as pipeline is to be laid in several localities.

The area is known for water crisis and still gallons of water is being wasted. The water scarcity will turn graver as Mercury rises in the coming days and wastage of drinking water is certainly a bad sight. We have informed the Mango Notified Area Committee (MNAC) a few days back. But no action has been initiated so far,” said Pandey.

According to the information, the water problem is more severe in the areas located at the tail-end of water supply system and on the city outskirts. The areas of Mango, Baghbera, Jugsalai, Pursudih and Karandih are the worst affected areas. Jusco, which had erected the water kiosk, expressed ignorance about water wastage and promised to inform the local civic body Mango Notified Area Committee to check the leaking taps.

“We are not aware of the water wastage. Yes, we had constructed the infrastructure in 2012 on a one-time basis due to request of the then local MlA Banna Gupta even though the area does not fall under our jurisdiction. However, any repair work is the responsibility of the Mango Notified Area Committee (MNAC),” said Jusco official.
