Further decline in monsoon activity predicted in State

The ominous lull in the monsoon has faded the euphoria that was built with its arrival in Jharkhand. After uneven shower in the State clouds have moved away for another destination leaving certain pockets with abundance while others dry amid the predictions of a below normal monsoon in Jharkhand.

In Jharkhand, monsoon arrived on June 19 resulting in heavy showers in Eastern and Northern parts of the State.

However, the system that was built over the Bay of Bengal has subsided and moved further in North-East direction hence Jharkhand is not likely to experience the monsoon showers until a similar phenomenon builds up in the Bay of Bengal.

The IMD predicts tough days for farmers till the end of the month. Although there will be a possibility of RATS (Rain And Thunderstorm) at isolated places in Jharkhand there will be a decline in monsoon activity for about a week.

“We can say monsoon is not active over Jharkhand and it will take sometime to become active however possibility of RATS (rain and thunderstorm) exists,” said Forecast Officer at Indian Meteorological Department at Ranchi, RK Mahto.

The predictions are a warning sign for certain pockets that did not receive sufficient rainfall in last three days. Even as places in Damodar basin witnessed heavy rainfall (214-mm at some places) Garhwa, Vishrampur and Daltonganj have slipped into dry zone category with the lowest rainfall recorded (21.7mm) at Daltonganj since monsoon entered Jharkhand.

To make the matter worse, in past 24-hours rainfall at Bokaro was recorded at just 5.4mm, Jamshedpur 5.2mm and Ranchi only 2.0mm till 8:30 hours of June 22.

“If a cyclonic activity builds over the dry zones then we may see good showers in those areas,” added the Forecast Officer.

Interestingly, temperature is likely to head north in Ranchi in next 72-hours and the maximum will be 34 whereas the minimum is likely to hover around 24-degrees. The possibility of RATS also exists in Ranchi and adjoining areas amid the predictions of generally to partly cloudy sky.
