After stern warning from Jharkhand High Court to improve traffic conditions, officials have once again begun exercise to devise a proper plan to address concerns regarding smooth traffic in the capital. The HC’s order came on Friday while hearing a Public Interest litigation (PIl) filed for pushing the Government to undertake steps to ensure better traffic on the city roads. Following the HC’s order, Chief Executive Officer of Ranchi Municipal Corporation Prashant Kumar and Traffic SP Karthik S explored the possibilities of decongesting the busy Main Road by removing encroachment and earmarking temporary vending zones by making best use of space available along the 2-km stretch.

Against the court’s order of getting things done in a month the CEO issued instructions to get things going in about 15-days time. The court has asked CEO and Traffic SP to appear with compliance note in the next hearing that is likely to be held after one month. “Work will start in 15 days. Right now we are making temporary arrangements as the work at Jaipal Singh stadium is yet to be completed. Once the work at Jaipal Singh stadium will be complete vendors will be shifted there,” said the RMC CEO.

The team of the CEO and Traffic SP identified lands under the command of the municipal corporation near a prominent retail chain at Main Road, near Daily Market; Hanuman Mandir where about six-feet of vending zone will be created with proper barricading and space near Sadar Hospital where a six-feet vending zone is proposed with proper demarcation to confine vendors and stop them from spilling over on the street.

The RMC is also likely to develop multi-storey buildings to accommodate vendors and provide parking facility to vehicles to keep stationary vehicles off the road and facilitate movement of vehicles. The RMC CEO instructed officials to prepare map for proposed buildings, vending zones and cover drains to create additional space for footpath vendors. The court in its observation of Friday had warned government for taking the orders lightly and emphasized on compliance at any cost.
