Former MP and State secretary BP Mehta of Communist Party of India wrote a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh requesting him to make efforts to ensure that the land Acquisition, Rehabilitation & Resettlement Bill is passed by the lok Sabha. Mehta has also written to senior leaders of all political parties in this regard.
While accusing both Congress and BJP for being hand-in-glove on the matter Mehta said, “Both parties are actually serving the interest of corporate houses hence they do not want the bill to be passed in the Parliament.”
Notably, the Bill was presented in 2011 by Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh and suggestions were sought from all political parties some of which were incorporated in the bill. Significantly, the Union Cabinet in a meeting chaired by PM has cleared as many as five amendments proposed by the BJP and CPM.
