The newly inaugurated State-owned Sadar Hospital in Khasmahal will be managed by a hospital management society. The East Singhbhum deputy commissioner Amitabh Kaushal, who on Tuesday inspected the hospital, directed the health department to take up step for constitution of a hospital management society within a week.

The deputy commissioner held a meeting with East Singhbhum civil surgeon Vibha Sharan and other officials of the hospital and ordered them to take up step for constitution of a hospital management society within a week. The deputy commissioner who visited different wards, OPD and departments at the hospital was annoyed over the lack of facilities.

“I am not very much happy. There are shortage of medicines and several other important things. I am of the opinion that the formation of hospital management society will help in proper utilisation of funds especially for such daily essentials. We are hopeful things will improve in days to come,” said Amitabh Kaushal. The hospital has been constructed at a cost of `4.72 crore. The construction work started in the year 2008 and got over this year. The hospital has a capacity of 100 beds. “It’s an irony that a well built hospital with all sophisticated medical equipment has failed to yield results for the public,” said an official.

Although there are a few private hospitals on the 9-km-long Pursudih-Tatanagar stretch but because of the expensive nature of treatment in private hospitals, the economically poor people visit the Government-run Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Hospital frequently. “Mostly in the emergency situation, we confront trouble travelling to the city and particularly at night. Hope, the district administration will pay heed to our concerns,” said Narsingh Munda, 32, who has recently submitted a memorandum to the deputy commissioner seeking intervention into the matter. “There has been a delay in the formation of the hospital management society. Timely formation would have made things easy,” he added.  The hospital spread over has departments like pathology, gynaecology, paediatrics, medicine, ophthalmology, ENT, surgery and orthopaedics. But, due to lack of doctors and paramedical staff the orthopaedics and opthalmology units are lying defunct. Incidentally, health department allocates funds on different heads separately to hospitals and hospital management societies.

The deputy commissioner at the end also promised construction of the hospital boundary by the end of July to ensure safety. The hospital’s deep boring facility will also be renovated to end water woes.
