Fishermen's sweet home dream turns into reality

Dream of having one’s own home is coming true for the State fishermen as the State fishery department is providing them home under fisherman welfare scheme. Under this scheme till date as many as 10,000 homes have been constructed and 14,000 other are yet to be built.

Deputy Director of Fishery Department Ashish Kumar said, “For the last 13 years this project is running successfully all across the state. Under this scheme we ought to provide as many as ten homes in every village and in Sahebganj, Bedo, Nagra, Chutia and lohardaga places we have provided them around 300-400 houses.”

This scheme is sponsored by the Central Government, wherein 50 per cent cost coming is met by it while the rest half by the State government. The fishermen are provided a house measuring 18x13 foot. This scheme is running successfully all across the state for around thirteen years. Both central and state government is leaving no loop hole in making this project a successful venture.

He further added, “We have ‘Matsya Mitra’ in every village who advertise and inform the fishermen about this scheme and make available the application form for it to them. The applications then are got verified by block officials and after that the beneficiaries are allotted the money to build houses. Till date no complain has been registered from the fishermen who are dwelling in their houses. The basic motive behind this scheme is to provide all the fishermen of the state their own shelter. We are hopeful that in the coming days we will be able to achieve the target.”

Ramkishan Nayak, a fisherman dwelling in Chutia said, “I am able to have my own home because of the fishery department. This scheme is inducing hope within people of our community that we can dream of our own home. Our condition is of hand to mouth and we cannot dream about a shelter for ourselves and our upcoming generation. This scheme is really proving to be beneficial for us.”

“Under this scheme there is a level of transparency between the department and the beneficiary. Those having homes under Indira Awas scheme cannot avail this facility. Till date we have not faced any problem relating to this scheme,” said Manpuran Nayak another fisherman.
