A four-member team from environment NGO Yugantar Bharti laboratory (accredited to Jharkhand State Pollution Control Board) at Sidroul in Ranchi on Thursday collected water samples from Jubilee lake under the supervision of NGO member KK Sharma.
The team comprising Pawan Kumar, Sanjiv Kumar Singh, Dipankar Karmakar and Uday Mondal collected the samples from four inlets to the lake and the lone outlet of the lake and carried out spot test for pH level and total dissolved solid. The other parameters for which the samples will be tested include nitrate level, residual chlorine, hardness of water and biological oxygen demand (BOD).
It may be mentioned that taking a suo-motto cognizance of the report – ‘Obnoxious weeds choking picturesque Jubilee lake’ published in the May 7 edition of ‘The Pioneer’, a division bench comprising Chief Justice R Banumathi and Justice S Chandrashekhar also asked the Jamshedpur Utilities & Services Company ltd (JUSCO) and the State Pollution Control Board to take necessary action and submit report within a week.
Hundreds of fish had died in the lake. The deaths were caused due to decreasing dissolved oxygen level caused by dense vegetation of algae, toxic pollutants and sudden change of water due to evening showers. Meanwhile, JUSCO, has assured that steps are being taken to clean Jubilee lake.
KK Sharma, head zoology department Jamshedpur Cooperative College said that the team has carried out test for pH level and TDS of the sample at the spot. “However, rest will be tested at our lab.”
