The Ranchi Police on Saturday lodged an FIR against house surgeon Narayan Hansda, popularly known as ‘Boss’ on the campus of Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS). The booking was in pursuance of a Jharkhand High Court directive.
A Bariatu Police Station officer told The Pioneer that the FIR was lodged after recording the statement of three students. Any action will be taken after completing investigation. A Division Bench of Acting Chief Justice DN Patel and Justice Amitav Kumar Gupta had, on Thursday, directed the SSP to hear out a trio who had allegedly been harassed by a house surgeon.
First year students Sanjeev Kumar, Sanjeevani Pranjal and Ravi Manohar had filed an affidavit. Sanjeevani said Hansda demanded Rs 2 lakh from her and threatened her while Sanjeev was brutally assaulted and Ravi too threatened. Incidentally, one Asim Kumar Samanta too had filed a PIl on illegal admissions at RIMS. It was during the hearing of this petition that this harassment case came up.
The court then appointed lawyer Krishna Murari as Amicus Curiae and asked him to file a report. In a nutshell, no action has been taken against Hansda, who enjoys the patronage of hospital authorities as well as local police officers. He tormented students and extorted sizeable sums of money, which, if not paid, resulted in assault. According to sources, when he failed in this, he also got a PIl filed, saying admission of bona fide students were not in accordance with the law.
The Amicus Curiae’s probe report details behaviour of the surgeon and PIl petitioner and how the litigation was mala fide. “Several facts were known to the PIl petitioner and all these material facts have been suppressed by him,” according to the court. It noted that there is atmosphere of terror on the entire RIMS campus and that the educational environment was suffering because of Hansda.
Sanjeevani’s lawyer said she got legal admission into the MBBS course, according to recommendation made by Jharkhand Combined Entrance Competitive Examination Board. The court has now fixed next date for hearing as September 23 and directed the police to complete recording statements and lodging the FIR.
