Fine to be imposed for leaving medical studies midway

Published on:

leaving medical studies midway would cost students quite a wealth as the State Government’s decision aims to curb the practice especially prevalent among the post-graduate students with fine from Rs 10-15 lakh.

Even as MBBS students would have to shell out Rs 10-lakh for leaving the session midway for PG students the monetary fine would be Rs 15-lakh. The penal provision has been welcomed by the premier Government owned college, Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences as it would lessen concerns of filling seats midway. The decision would also benefit Patliputra Medical College and Hospital at Dhanbad and MGM Jamshedpur as students often leave college to pursue MBBS at other prestigious colleges.

“This (fine) is more effective on students of MD and is more appropriate as students of MD leave for various reasons such as for studying elsewhere get better college the leave whereas some students leave studies midway to pursue studies in the subject of their choice,” said Director RIMS, Bl Sherwal.

The decision to control the practice by PG students has been endorsed as it would pave the way for students low in the merit list and interested in pursuing studies to take admission in the course.

Interestingly, those choosing not to pursue medical study in MBBS after final round of counseling would also face actions. However, the practice is less prevalent in MBBS where except central quota all seats are filled with fresh students. According to sources, students who would not take admission after selection are likely to be debarred from appearing in the MBBS admission tests conducted for medical colleges in the State.

“The only matter of concern for MBBS is that the students should not leave after third counseling because it becomes difficult to fill the vacant seats after September 30,” maintained Sherwal.

According to unconfirmed sources, in last one-year nearly eight students have left PG studies midway to pursue studies elsewhere.
