Southwest monsoon has arrived in some parts of Jharkhand and the onset of monsoon across Jharkhand will begin within the next 48 hours, the Meteorological Centre, Ranchi announced on Friday. Monsoon is already passing through West Singhbhum, East Singhbhum, and Saraikela Kharsawan districts of the State, and the meteorological department has predicted that the rest of the State will also receive rainfall within 4-5 days.Thunderstorm and lightening are also to be expected across the state in the next three days.

Talking to the media persons on Friday, Director Meteorological Centre Ranchi SD Kotal said that the onset is delayed by 10 days this year, arriving on June 21 instead of their estimated date of June 10. “This delay might affect the overall rainfall period, but sometimes the rainfall makes up for the delay with a prolonged season,” he said.

When asked about the situation in Ranchi district, he said that normal rainfall might happen in southern areas of the district, while the rest of the district might receive moderate rainfall.

He also pointed out that they are expecting overall below normal rainfall between June 21 to June 27, while the week after that (June 28 to July 4) might see normal rainfall.

Heavy rainfall is expected in some parts of central and southern districts of the State in the next 24 hours. Many areas in the State have already begun receiving downpour in the last 24 hours: Jamshedpur 48.2 mm, Chaibasa 30 mm, Latehar 19.6, Bokaro (Chass) 21.6 mm, Ghatsila 15.8 mm among others.

Last year, the onset of monsoon had been declared on June 25 with 28 percent below normal rainfall.
