Several retired teachers, who were felicitated on Teacher’s Day, aired their grievances with regards to pending retirement benefits and increments and also deteriorating academic system of RU. Speaking to The Pioneer, 90-year old former VC HK lal felt the immediate need of improving the middle and secondary education at both State and Central board affiliated schools.

“RU students usually fail to cope up in English language as most of them belong to the State board affiliated schools where English is taught by translating it into Hindi. This creates difficulty for the students as they remain untouched with the basics of English language,” he pointed out.

“At RU, academic problems have multiplied. In our times, educating the students was a passion which now is merely a profession for the professors,” said 78-year old Dr Amal Chakraborty, a reputed Botany Professor who served here for 36 years and retired in 1996. The retired teachers, including Dr Amal, Dr CP Singh, Dr Mukhlal Singh and Dr Gulaam Thakur expressed annoyance with the university’s inability to provide regular pension benefits. “We served the university for more than three decades but at this age when money is the only life support, we get it with a pause,” said Dr Gulaam.

Defending the opinions of these popular senior citizen teachers, RU VC Dr laxmi Narayan Bhagat in his welcome speech informed that Rs 26 crore will be released by the State HRD soon for those retired teachers who are to get benefits between July 2006 to November 2012. To make the moment more memorable, a book titled ‘The Turbulent Years of Ranchi University’ was unveiled by Dr Narendra Bhagat who worked as Registrar from 1986-1988, explaining the academic and administrative episodes of this varsity administrative scenario which are still the same.
