Fast-unto-death stir in JP Jail intensifies

Published on:

The fast unto death agitation in lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan Central Jail has now entered into fourth day under the leadership of Sunil Tirkey, Etwa Singh and Uday Rao.

The agitators are demanding release of those inmates who had already completed the tenure of their sentence as per the judgment of Supreme Court of India in KlPC (CRl) 48/2014 given on 23rd July 2015.

Some weeks ago when Chief Justice of Jharkhand High Court Virendra Singh had visited JP Central Jail then he had assured the inmates that soon steps will be taken to implement the judgment in the State after consultation with the State Government but till date meeting of the State council of review of punishment has not been organised.

Four days ago about 50 inmates of JP Central Jail started fast unto death agitation and within two days the number swelled to more than 80. More than 300 inmates of JP Central Jail are supporting them and the number is increasing day by day.

MlA Nirmala Devi who came out of JP Central Jail on Thursday noon said that she had assured them to raise their matter before the Chief Minister and if needed in Assembly.

Her husband Ex-Minister Yogendra Sao who is still in jail has announced to fight for their cause in the streets after going out of the jail.

The agitation is going on under the banner of Jharkhand Bandi Mukti Samiti. President of this organisation Sanjay Singh said that the State Government is not implementing apex courts judgment so we are on the path of agitation and soon it will spread in other jails of the State.

He said that the revised judgment came on 23rd July and first week of October has passed, it clearly states that the present Raghuvar Das Government has no time to look into such a sensitive human right matter.

On Wednesday evening a marathon meeting took place in the jail office between the representatives of agitating inmates and jail officials led by superintendent Rupam Sahay but it failed.

On Thursday SDO Anuj Kumar Prasad sat with the representatives of agitators and tried his best to end the agitation but his efforts also went in vain and yielded no result. However he had assured the agitators that he will convey their demands to the state government through Deputy Commissioner.

In the meantime the conditions of two inmates sitting on fast unto death deteriorated on Thursday and were admitted in Sadar Hospital Hazaribagh. One inmate Chintu Bhuiyan is a resident of Chaibasa and is behind the bars since last 32 years. Another inmate Sanjay Bauri belongs to Dhanbad district and has completed 19 years in jail so far.
