Planting saplings happens to be one of the main programmes across the country to celebrate International Environment Day ,but select people of Jharia observed a day long fast that was named as' paryavaran satyagrah' to spread awareness for the same.
Organised by Youth concept in coordination with Green Life and Jharia Bachao Sammittee hundreds of people joined in phases at Jharia Children park so that the issue of high pollution in Jharia and need to protect the environment be brought to fore .
"Our main focus is to bring to the fore how the mining companies both private and government owned were neglecting an important aspect while operating mines in Jharia coalfields," said Dr Manoj Singh of Green Life .
People are forced to live with coal dust and corban gases due to uncontrolled opencast mining due to negligence of BCCL towards the environment, he said
It's worth mentioning that Jharia faces underground mines fire for over a century and mining companies are neglecting the environmental aspect.
Trees are being fell by outsourced companies and green patches are being filled by overburden, said former ward Councillor Anup Saw.
Akhlak Ahmed of Youth Concept also distributed samplings among those who attended the day-long fast with a request not only to plant them but also ensure that they are saved till they grow up.
