For Chatterjee family, dogs are not a luxury but an integral and deeply loved part of their family. And visiting their house at posh Forest Colony of the town, anyone could easily feel Chatterjee’s love for dogs. The garden of their house has four graves of dogs, died one-after-another since 2003. Nilanjan Chatterjee (68) who retired from a private job said he and his wife Uttara and two daughters Shreejita and Sharanya first kept a boxer breed dog named Pluto in 2001 but unfortunately it died in 2003.
He said it was a big shock for his family but then they decided to give a place to Pluto on the campus of the house only. He said Pluto was buried in a corner and a grave constructed.
Nilanjan said from 2003 to 2010, they lost four dogs including Pluto and all buried on the campus with graves constructed. We used to give full respect to our family members after their death but never care to do the same with our pets. “Dogs are so loyal, better than we humans.
So, is it right to neglect them after their death”, asked Nilanjan. I am happy that my wife and daughters also have the same love for dogs as I am having, he added. He said now his younger daughter Sharanya shifted to Bangalore with his husband.
Shreejita, a teacher at prominent Carmel school said they never forget the death anniversary of all the four dead dogs. She said they burn candles at grave and and recall the memories of their four-legged-animal. We even have two albums which contained pictures of all the dogs we kept and we are having right now, added she. She said when all the four died from 2003 to 2010, it was like losing member of the family.
She said they have two rooms in the house for dogs and even cook food for them separately giving them meat every alternate day. She said they have two dogs with them right now.
Mother Uttara said dogs are so selfless and their love so pure. So, we also buried them in our garden making grave to show our pure love for them, added she.
