Electoral roll revision paints encouraging picture

Recently concluded electoral roll revision seems to have achieved the goal set by the office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Jharkhand that has put extension of the process on hold due to overwhelming responses from across the State. The revision process concluded on October 15.

Notably, the office of the CEO has received around 12.40 lakh fresh applications, including nearly 2 lakh applications for deletion, from different parts of the States in the course of the revision process which lasted for over a month. Tentatively, the updated roll is likely to be published by January 5 next year.

“Other works will be obstructed if we extend the revision process. We have received huge volumes of application that needs to be disposed off so that we can publish the final roll,” said Deputy CEO Abhay Kumar Rao.

Higher number of applications incidentally means an increase in the number of electorates compared to the existing roll which contains as many as 1.90 crore electorates in Jharkhand.  “Usually, applications for deletion are accepted by the office,” added Rao.

Besides, the male-female ratio and the elector-population (EP) ratio have also witnessed a marginal increase as a result of the revision drive. While the male-female ratio went up from 883 to 890, the EP ratio is expected to jump in the range of 1.5 to 2 percent. Interestingly, the marginal rise in the EP will to take the EP to 55, still below the ideal ratio of 65.
