Economy grim; mass in pain, says AITUC

Newly elected General Secretary of All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) Amarjeet Kaur on Monday expressed concerns over condition of Indian economy and said that every single business sector except those run by a handful of rich corporate houses in country was facing the heat of alleged anti-people and anti-labourer approach of the Union Government.

Kaur said after the concluding session of three-day AITUC national meeting at CMPDI auditorium here,  that the BJP government at the Centre completely failed to deliver on every corner of its promises so far.

The organisation released a comprehensive report on concluding day which said that the BJP government was aggressively promoting its right wing approach in the country, leaving the labourers, students and small businessmen in utter pain. Failing rate of employment generation, declining growth of industrial and manufacturing sector despite attractive plans like Make in India, Stand Up India and alike, increasing poverty, price rise and other prevailing topics were discussed at length in the report. Notably, it is for the first time in the history of 1920-founded AITUC that a woman has been elected to head the organisation.

“This is a Government of handful of business families and the government wants to keep all its help directly or indirectly directed to them only. The labourer class is suffering, students are suffering and the trade as a whole is suffering post demonetization followed by spine-breaking Goods and Services Tax (GST). AITUC shall keep reuniting all the classes being suppressed by the government and we will soon see the guard changing,” said outgoing General Secretary, former MP and veteran CPM leader Gurudas Dasgupta on the day.

Kaur said that the organisation was going to conduct mass movements all over the country in phased manner from January next year to spread awareness about true picture of economic and social picture at present in country. “We have arrived in a situation where every other promise made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during last general elections has started appearing a Jumla, as claimed by none other than BJP president Amit Shah. Disastrous impact of demonetization and devastating effects of ill-conceived GST, increasing burden of Non-Performing Assets (NPA) of banks which the government is apparently willing to increase, rising corruption and government’s inability to unearth black money are something no one can afford to remain ignorant about,” said Kaur.
