Eateries and restaurants close shutters for Tusu

Most of the restaurants and eateries got closed from Friday as labourers have already packed their bags for their native places for Makar Sankranti  which will be celebrated tomorrow. In Jamshedpur, most of the eateries down their shutters due to shortage of staff who hail from Purulia, West Bengal or Patamda and Potka blocks of East Singhbhum or other parts of Jharkhand.

Traditionally, Tusu, one of the popular festivals of the state bring immense joy and happiness to the people, particularly tribals of Jharkhand but for the hoteliers or for that matter the owners of the scores of eateries in the city these three days of the festival carry huge losses to them. The three days starting from January 13 to 15 precisely and, in some cases even a week, the small and moderate scale hotels that caters snacks, tea and other mouth watering items to the consumers literally close down their shops, as most of the labourers go on Tusu holiday to their native places.

Famous dosa points Anand, Aashirwad and Madrasi Hotel will also remain closed from today.

Unlike any other major festival in the city including Durga Puja, Diwali, this is one time when eatery owners have to keep their joints closed for the labourers as all of them hail from the schedule and tribal castes. The eateries closed from today will re-open on January 21.

In Jamshedpur 80 percent of the hotels that include tea stalls, small and medium scale eateries and few of the popular restaurants pull down their shutters for three consecutive days at least, as it is genuinely difficult for them to run their business in the light of fewer work force.

"I have closed my shop for next few days and, it is only after January 20 the business will start as few of the labourers would get back," informed, Ganesh Gupta, owner of Mathura Mistan Bhandar in Kadma.
