Students of Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee University (DSPMU) will now get a chance to discuss their grievances on an open platform with the leaders of students’ union.
DSPMU’s first elected students’ union body has decided to organize a Chhatra Darbaar, on the lines of chief minister’s Janta Darbaar which will be organized on a regular basis, starting Wednesday.
Students’ union secretary Bhagwat Kumar said, “The Darbaar will be organized at the office of students’ union, every day from 11 am to 1 pm. During this time the students can approach the union members and share their problems with us.”
He added that initially the programme would be organized every day, but after a month, when students are familiar with the concept, the number of days would be reduced to twice or thrice a week.
The union will try to resolve the issues of the students on spot or immediately forward it to the university administration if their intervention is required.
Deputy Secretary of the union Sujit Kumar Munda said, “Such a programme is necessary as the students are often hesitant to come forward and discuss their problems. If they are given a chance to share their problem in a group and be backed by other students, they will eventually become more open about their issues.”
Students of DSPMU face a number of problems on a daily basis, right form unhygienic toilets to non-updated library. Also, there are a number of problems related to courses, examination fees and others about which the students can directly talk to the union.
Kumar said, “Many times students do not know who to approach in the university administration to get their problems solved as a result of which they are forced to run from pillar to post. For instance if a student if a student could not pay fees on time and cannot afford paying a late fee then we can work toward getting his late fees waived. Also, if a student needs an important book which is not available in the library, they can approach us.”
He added, “The union will also focus on issues related to harassment of female students.”
The Chhatra Darbaar would also come as a relief to the administrative officers and teachers as students will not approach them every now and then and instead all the problems would go through the union once or twice every week.
“We are trying to bridge the gap between the students and university officials. And create a students’ friendly environment,” Bhagwat said.
