Noted ophthalmologist of Jharkhand, Dr. Bharti Kashyap, not only participated in the annual convention of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS) held in Los Angeles, California, USA from 25 to 28 April 2025, but also presented 2 scientific research papers on complex topics of ophthalmology among eye specialists from many countries of the world. She was the only ophthalmologist from Jharkhand to participate in this convention and given the opportunity to present 2 research papers.
Dr. Bharti Kashyap said that she has presented two research papers in the annual conference of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery held in Los Angeles, California. There are some diseases in our body like pseudo exfoliation in which there is high cylinder power along with cataract, glaucoma. In such a situation, it is necessary to get the toric lens implanted in the same sitting along with the cataract and glaucoma surgery because the patients want to avoid repeated surgeries and after the implantation of toric lens, the cylinder power is eliminated after the operation and the dependence on glasses for distant vision ends and the quality of vision is also very good. In Kashyap Memorial Eye Hospital, we developed a formula for this and I presented the same in the annual conference of the Eye Society of America.
She said that 50% of general population has mild astigmatism of one dioptre. Today cataract surgery is regarded as refractive surgery aiming zero power after cataract surgery. Correction of cylinder power is very important, so that the patient uses no glasses for distance after cataract surgery. To remove cylinder power from eye, we use laser arcuate incisions on cornea or Image Guided Manual Arcuate Incisions on Cornea or Toric IOL implantation
In this research paper we found that FLACS Arcuate Incisions, Image Guided Manual Arcuate Incisions and Toric IOLs reduced astigmatism but Toric IOLs implantation gave long term better post operative visual acuity without any power and contrast sensitivity also resulting in less number of eyes using spectacles post operatively, she said.
Dr Kashyap further said that her second research paper was based on the fact that 40 to 50% of the people in the country have cylinder power of up to one diopter. If it is not removed at the time of cataract operation, then after the operation, cylinder power is required for distant vision and the quality of vision is also not very good. There are three ways to remove this cylinder power such as making an incision on the cornea with a laser, making an incision on the cornea with the help of an image guided system or implanting a toric lens. The second research paper was based on which method gives better results after 6 months. It was highly appreciated by the eye doctors present there from all corners of the world.
In some diseases like psedoexfoliation, patients usually develop cataract, glaucoma and mostly they have high cylinder power too. Patients want cataract and glaucoma surgery at same time along with removal of cylinder power by Toric IOL implantation.
Due to scaring at the gkaucoma surgery site , when we do all the three procedures at a time, it is difficult to reach zero power post operatively . So we did a research in Kashyap Memorial Eye Hospital, ranchi ,jharkhand on how can we do cataract and glaucoma surgery together with removal of cylinder power by Toric IOL implantation all at a time. We developed a formula and after applying that formula we can have aToeic IOL power which after implantation will lead to zero power after cataract surgery
With this formula we can do glaucoma, cataract and Toric IOL implantation at a time with the best post-operative results.
