The door to door garbage collection service remains in a shambles despite the assurance of Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC) to streamline the service within a week. Regardless of taking the charge of solid waste collection from RMSW – Essel Infra, the company managing the work of garbage lifting here in the capital city since 2016, no significant changes have been brought by the civic guardians.
“Attempts are being made to streamline the service of door to door garbage collection. Due to the unavailability of data base of 33 wards, the Municipal Corporation is facing some problem. Within a few days, all wards will be under the supervision of the civic body. By far, no official statement has been released by the company about its further course of action,” said RMC City Manager (Sanitation Cell), Sandeep Kumar.
Sharing the details about the plans and engagement of resources, Kumar further added, “The Municipal Corporation has started the cleaning work and garbage collection in shift-wise. Sanitation workers have been engaged in sufficient numbers while cleaning during the night shift has been also started at a few localities. As many as 1,700 labourers including 150 vehicles are being used by the corporation. Local dumping pits have been identified.”
Meanwhile, a few ward councilors stated that in the absence of availability of vehicles and other resources, the work has come to a standstill. “The slack approach of the civic body is creating trouble. The service is yet to be regularised by the Municipal Corporation. Only twice or thrice in a week, vehicles are being send in different wards for lifting garbage. No formal meetings have been organised by RMC to chalk out any plan,” said, Arun Kumar Jha, Ward Councilor of 26.
The Municipal Corporation’s decision to appoint zonal supervisors for managing the cleanliness affairs at the 11 zones is also hanging in the balance. In accordance to the earlier plan, labourers including the ward supervisors were supposed to be made accountable for the work of the door to door garbage collection at each ward. In addition, the RMC official clarified that in spite of conducting rounds of meeting with the representatives of RMSW- Essel Infra, the company is yet to handover the vehicles and other resources.
“The roster plan being prepared in consultation with the senior officials will be tabled soon. The daily progress report will be also prepared by the staffs for monitoring the cleanliness status in all the 53 wards besides conducting the monthly reviews by the officials,” the City Manager further stated.
