East Singhbhum deputy commissioner Amitabh Kaushal during a meeting with the political parties’ representatives on Monday made it clear that any attempt to influence voters in the name of religious sentiments will be strictly dealt with under the Representation of the People Act 1951 and IPC as this would amount to violation of the model code of conduct which was enforced in the district with the declaration of Assembly elections.

“ We have clearly informed the political parties representative and a circular was later issued by the sub divisional officer of Dhalbhum Prem Ranjan that any political party or group or leader having affiliation to political party cannot erect stalls or camps near Chhath ghats or near Muharram festivity. They are not allowed to even distribute free puja materials or paste hoardings or banners giving festive wishes. This attempt would be considered as attempt to woo voters using their religious sentiments,” said Amitabh Kaushal. Chhath will be celebrated on October 28-29 while Muharram falls on November 4.

A circular was also issued that NGOs having patronage of various political leaders cannot set up stalls with large hoardings on the approach roads to different chhath ghats. Similarly, during Muharram processions, various political parties cannot set up drink stalls for the devotees.

Kaushal said that after announcements of elections the model code of conduct has been enforced and the parties should strictly adherence to the model code of conduct. He said the parties should immediately remove their publicity banners and hoardings from the city. Moreover none of the political party can organise any meeting or procession without any prior permission. “We will make sure that the model code of conduct is implemented in letter and spirit and any lapses on the part of the parties would invite stern actions,” said district official.
