Doctors perform liposuction successfully on woman

Published on:

A team of doctors from the department of Plastic Surgery and Anesthesiology recently performed liposuction (also known as lipo-sculpturing or lipoplasty or suction lipectomy) successfully for the first time in the hospital on a 22 year old woman to give her the desired body contour.

The feat was accomplished under the guidance of Director (Medical & Health Services) Dr. A M Kekre by Dr. Aninda Mandal, Dr. Uma Shanker and Dr. Anand Prakash (all from Plastic Surgery) with assistance of Dr.(Mrs) Anjali Sahoo and Dr.Anil Mishra from  the department of Anesthesiology.

The surgery lasted for more than two hours during which a sizeable amount of fat from the patient’s body was removed. The patient had been put on a diet and was monitored before the operation and post-operative care has to be taken to see that the body weight is maintained with controlled diet and exercise. The patient is now doing well after the surgery.

liposuction involves the use of an instrument known as Cannula and a vacuum pump machine to remove unwanted fat from different areas of the body. The Cannula is connected to the pump by a tube and is inserted into the areas of fat to be removed through small incisions. The surgeon then moves the Cannula tip back and forth to break the fat which is then sucked out through the tube.  The procedure is safe and very common in the western countries where the patient is released on the same day.

The fundamental principles of this technique have evolved into a method of choice of treating various entities. Applications of liposuction are now being used to treat many pathological conditions as well. Notably, besides Bokaro General Hospital, this facility is available only in a select few hospitals in the state.
