In a tragic incident on Sunday, five persons of a doctor family were found dead in a relative’s flat of Riviresa Apartment at Kokar under Sadar Police Station in Ranchi. Dr Sushanto Sarkar, head of the family and a resident of Noida in UP, was himself found bleeding profusely apparently due to self-inflicted injury.

The doctor was retired from Army and had came to Ranchi two days back at his relative’s flat allegedly due to the threat given by his daughter-in-law Madhumita Sarkar that she will send them to jail by lodging dowry case against them.

“Prima facie it appears to be a case of poisoning where all the five persons of the family were killed after being given anesthesia to them. The doctor after killing the family members through poisoning also tried to kill himself by stabbing several times,” said a police officer requesting anonymity. The doctor is also extremely critical and battling for his life at RIMS.

“Reportedly the family left Noida after being tortured and harassed by the daughter-in-law that she will lodge a dowry case against them,” said the police officer. Those who were found dead have been identified as Dr Sushanto Sarkar’s wife Anjana Sarkar, son Sameer Sakar, wife of his nephew Momita Sarkar and Momita’s daughters Samita and Sunita Sarkar. Momita and Madhumita were siblings.

As Momita’s husband lived somewhere else, she had been living with the doctor’s family. Incidentally, the doctor had also given a written intimation to Sadar Police Station that they might be entrapped in a false case by his daughter-in-law Madhumita Sarkar. Sources in the police department also revealed that the family was having a dispute with her over the custody of their seven-year-old grandson.

Reports suggest that several suicide notes have been recovered from the flat which may lead to any conclusion. The police are also waiting Dr Sushanto Sarkar to estabilise and record his statement. Further investigation and collection of other forensic evidences were on till late in the evening.
