DMC initiates action against hospitals for disposing bio-waste in open

Published on:

The Dhanbad Municipal Corporation (DMC ) has initiated action against hospitals and nursing homes  for disposing of biowaste in open .

Interestingly ,it's over a decade now that  DMC  was constituted and witnessed two elections but yet is in search of land for  establishing a biomedical waste disposal plant.

DMC  commissioner Satyendra Kumar  said, "Drive has been launched against nursing homes and hospitals disposing biomedical waste in open  though they have to abide by the DMC norms for disposing such materials.Often they dispose it all materials in common bin of the DMC or throw it next to roads . Several such cases have been reported and action has been initiated against such violators.

Kumar said , among the violators happens to be the largest government hospital of the district . Punitive action has been initiated against such violators both government and private nursing homes".

Those imposed fine under municipal act are a private clinic near the city centre and another hospital located at Sardar Patel Nagar.

The drive is to continue , said Kumar. However, he also accepted that the DMC still has no plan for disposing of any type of waste material including the biomedical waste generated by hospitals and clinics.

The DMC also is not aware about the quantity of biomedical waste generated by hospitals and  clinics located within its jurisdiction .

" We are in search of land for setting up a waste disposal plant.About two acres of land is required for the plant" , Kumar said.

It's worth mentioning that the DMC board had passed a proposal for setting  up such a plant in its board meeting about three years ago .

However,it couldn't do much even after passing the proposal even though it had received allocation for the plant from the government.

The main reason is opposition from people as DMC proposes to set up such a plant.

Recently,  Sindri MLA  Indrajeet Mahto  raised voice of opposition for setting up such a plant in his assembly segment citing people's opposition.
