Digital surveillance plans soon to be a reality in Ranchi

The State capital will be brought under complete digital surveillance within next three months as the project awaits a thumbs up from State Government. Close Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras will be installed across the city to keep a close eye on the movement of trouble mongers.

The Detailed Project Report of the plan has been tabled before the State Government for approval and we hope to get it soon, said Inspector General (Provisions) RK Mallick, who is supervising the project on behalf of Jharkhand Police.

Work will begin in this direction as soon as the project is approved, Mallick stated. “As soon as the DPR is sanctioned, we will begin tender process to acquire the required equipments and manpower to install them. Process of installing CCTV cameras will begin within three months of floating tenders,” he said.

The surveillance cameras will be placed to efficiently cover as much of the city as possible. “More than 500 CCTV cameras will be installed at a total of 170 crucial locations of Ranchi. These locations include all 47 roundabouts of the city,” said Mallick. The project was ideated last year on suggestions from Chief Minister Raghubar Das after frequent criminal incidences, including murder, dacoity and theft. The plans again gathered steam earlier this year after CCTV cameras were effective in ensuring peaceful festive season last year.

It was also proposed to equip the apartments of the city with a set of four CCTV cameras to maintain an overall vigilance of the premises and the street in front of it. This will help in keeping an eye on the movement of shady characters in and around the building as well as ensure accountability of security staff working there.

Alongwith crime control, this digital enhancement to city’s security arrangements will also aid the plans to make Ranchi a Smart City as monitoring through CCTV camera system features in the project under the heading of Intelligent Transport System.
