Despite rainfall, Ranchi reels under water crisis

Despite heavy rains in Jharkhand for quite some time, rationing of drinking water in the name of water crisis in some areas of State Capital still continues to trouble residents in Ranchi. Officials claimed that due low intensity of rain, water bodies across the State capital are yet to be filled up due to which they were bound provide irregular water supply to the people.

“Since water level in Hatia Dam is yet to come up to optimum level, we have been providing limited water supply in HEC, Hinoo, Shukla colony and Doranda areas three days in a week. Once water level goes up in Hatia Dam, people will start getting regular water supply,” said Drinking Water and Sanitation

Executive Engineer KK Verma. There is only 9.9 feet water in Hatia Dam as compared to the standard level of 37 feet, added Verma.

The Executive Engineer also said that the intensity of rains witnessed recently in Ranchi and adjoining areas was not sufficient due to which level of water bodies did not go up as it was expected after such rainfalls. “Still we are waiting for adequate rainfall so that the water level in dams goes up and people could get sufficient water supply to quench their thirsts,” Verma added.

Officials of the Meteorological Department also asserted that till July 18, there has been 14 per cent less rainfall across the state. According to the data provided by Meteorological Department, out of 24 districts, 17 districts have recorded deficient rainfall including Ranchi.

“Rainfall in Ranchi still lags behind by 31 per cent while maximum deficiency of 36 per cent has been recorded in East Singhbhum. Palamu and Deoghar on the other hand, received 16 per cent surplus rainfalls,” said Forecasting Officer at Meteorological Department in Ranchi DG Hedau. He however, said that still there were chances of heavy rainfall in the rain deficient areas.
