Cases of death by suicide under the wheels of the trains are pretty high in Palamu, which has tracks both of the Dhanbad railway division and the Moghulsarai railway division.
There are 13 cases of death by suicide under the wheels of the trains from this April to second week of October. In the year 2019 this figure was 47 in comparison to 33 in the year 2018. Incidentally for two consecutive years 2020 and 2021 there were 21 deaths by suicide each.
Sources said during the Covid pandemic there were lesser number of deaths by suicide on the railway tracks as deaths by suicide in houses were higher.
A man who first tried to end his life on the railway tracks but in the nick of time changed his mind, said "Getting over run by train costs nothing to the man who so comes under the wheels of the trains. The GRP identifies and family gets hold of the remnants of the body."
A railway official not competent to speak to the press said people of all ages from 20 to 60 do die by suicide under the wheels of the trains. He said society should stand up for these people.
No fiscal relief comes to such a bereaved family where there is run over case by the train all for death by suicide.
