Sahebganj based physician Dr NR Roy, whose daughter, IPS officer Jaya Roy considered as nemesis of cybercriminals, lost his bank savings after unknown cybercriminals withdrew Rs 5.90 lakh cash from his bank account on Tuesday.
Roy, who was the SP of Jamtara district, had earned laurels for controlling and busting cybercrime.
The IPS officer, who is currently posted in the National Investigation Agency did not respond to the message whether her father became a victim of cybercriminals; an FIR was lodged at the Town police station of Sahibganj district on Tuesday.
According to the police Dr NR Roy, who is a doctor by profession has his account at the main branch of SBI in Sahebganj and his mobile number is seeded with his bank account.
On Tuesday the victim got a message that the service of his mobile number will be disconnected and to avoid disconnection he will have to follow certain procedures.
The victim got a call from cybercriminals, who convinced him to share the one-time password. Moment he shared password, criminals cleaned away cash from his bank account. He desperately rushed to the bank branch where he was advised to lodge an FIR.
Sahibganj SP Anuranjan Kispotta directed the SDPO to investigate the case on
priority basis and arrest the accused persons.
“A special team has been formed to investigate the case. It seems that this is the handiwork of Jamtara based cybercriminal. The cyber police are also working on this case,” an official of Sahibganj police station said.
An official of the cyber department said that Paytm wallet has been used to transfer the cash. “From tomorrow we will start a technical investigation and follow-up of this case,” said the official.
Roy had served as Ranchi SP (City). She was SP (Cyber) when the first cyber police station of Jharkhand was opened in Ranchi at a time when cybercrime had emerged as a big challenge before law enforcement agencies. Karmatand and Narainpur, the two localities of Jamtara district had earned notoriety as the hub of most of the cybercrime.
As cyber-SP she successfully investigated a number of cases of cyber fraud and arrested several cyber criminals.
In December 2016 she was transferred to Jamtara with a single objective to control cybercrime and her stint remained noteworthy as she arrested a large number of cybercriminals and secured their conviction. She carried an in-depth study of the pattern of the crime, technology and tricks used by criminals and also trained cops and officials to investigate cyber cases.
