CS pushes for cleanliness, hygiene at street-food hubs

Chief Secretary (CS) Sajal Chakraverty left the comfort of his bedroom to know the state of cleanliness in the city, and found traditional leaf plates (Dona) — commonly used by street vendors — scattered at many places.

With no provisions of dustbins at public places, people are found littering in open freely. Due to lack of dustbins, heaps of garbage is found alongside the city roads, in drains and pavements creating an unhygienic environment across the city.

Taking initiative to solve one of the biggest civic problems that haunts the city, Chakraverty ordered the Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC) officials to purchase 1,000 drums and 215 dustbins for the city. These drums after painted into orange colour will be placed at market areas and shopping streets for proper collection of the garbage.

“These areas are filled with eateries and shops and majority of the people choose to eat while they shop, throwing the wrappers, garbage, plastic bags on the roadside or roads due to lack of dustbins. To keep city garbage free it is essential to provide dustbins in these areas,” said Chakraverty.

Meanwhile, the State’s top official also ordered the RMC officials to form teams of five members each in every ward for collecting dry waste from the roads.

“We have named it Touch up Programme. The civic body will form five-member teams in all the 55 wards for ensuring collection of dry wastes from the roads. The collected refusals will be sent to waste recycle plant at Jhiri for its further treatment,” added Chakraverty.

Besides, cracking down on the street vendors for not adhering to the guidelines on cleanliness which states safe handling of food and its distribution in healthy surrounding, Chakraverty instructed the RMC officials to take stern action on the offenders within a week.

“It is mandatory for every street vendor to maintain hygiene at his stall. Here, majority of the vendors are found selling uncovered foods which adversely affect the health of the people to a great extend. To nip in the bud of such practices RMC officials had been instructed to conduct a checking drive on them and take stern action accordingly,” said Chakraverty.

RMC Chief Executive Officer Manoj Kumar, who was also present on the occasion, assured the CS that the instructions would be followed as soon as possible.

“All the instructions will be carried out earnestly. We will provide our all possible help to make the mission successful one,” said Kumar.

A large number of streetfood vendors sell varieties of items on City’s busy roads and most of them despite using plastic, leaf made plates and poly bags do not have proper facility to dispose the waste material.
