As Tata Steel subsidiary Jusco which looks after civic utilities gears up to make Jamshedpur the first city of the country to become ‘zero sewerage discharge’ city by mid-2017 by recycling and reuse of 100 per cent waste water, Urban Development and Housing, Transport Minister, Government of Jharkhand Chandreshwar Prasad Singh visited the JUSCO managed Kharkai Sewage Treatment Plant at Kharkai and liquid Medical Waste Treatment Plant at Tata Main Hospital.
The Minister accompanied by Jusco MD Ashish Mathur, deputy general manager (water management) Jusco R. K Singh and special officers of Jamshedpur notified area committee (Jnac) Deepak Sahay and Mango notified area committee (Mnac) special officer Jagadish Yadav saw the sewage treatment plant (STP) at Kharkhai in Bistupur where nearly 10 million litre of sewerage water is treated every day and used for gardening and irrigation work in different parts of the city.
The minister later in the day also visited the liquid medical waste treatment plant at Tata Main Hospital where medical waste water from operation theatres, laundry and medical units are treated and reused for gardening and irrigation.
“We will try to adapt the best practices of Jusco during implementation of drainage and sewerage projects wherein there will be construction of STPs. Facilities like the ones in Jusco are of the best quality and need to be replicated in other cities,” said Singh.
At the Kharkai Sewerage Treatment plant, which receives 9-10 MlD of sewage every day, Singh very carefully listened to how 100 per cent of the sewage received was disinfected, treated and recycled at the plant after which the treated water was reused for gardening and irrigation purposes.
At liquid Medical Waste Treatment Plant, inside TMH, the Minister was briefed on how in a one-of-its-kind kind facility in Jharkhand, 100KlD of liquid medical waste which is received everyday is disinfected, treated and recycled and reused for gardening inside the TMH premises.
Ashish Mathur also shared the details of the ongoing project of JUSCO at Bara Sewerage Treatment Plant, which receives 30 MlD sewage everyday and explained to the Minister about how upon completion of the project by the end of this year, 100% of the sewage received at this plant will also be given tertiary treatment and reused for gardening and industrial purposes increasing the daily water conservation by JUSCO to 40-41 MlD through the recycle and reuse model.
Chandreshwar Prasad Singh not only expressed his delight on understanding the exemplary work done by JUSCO to conserve water, he also urged other organizations and government bodies to follow suit and adopt such sustainable green initiatives.
