Covid-19 restrictions make Ranchiites tech savvy

With online classes and work from home in place, the Covid pandemic has enabled Ranchiites across all generations to become more technologically sound.

The virtual world has proved to be a boom not just for attending school or conducting meetings but it has also helped people connect with their near and dear ones who could be living just a few kilometers away.

For Hridaan, a student of standard VII, the Internet is not just a medium for studying but it is also helping him stay connected with his friends.

“I have got to learn more apps like Zoom, Cam Scanner and Adobe Scanner. Since I have to upload my assignments in a PDF format, I have learnt how to convert a word document into one. During exams me and my friends were also able to have group study sessions and for recreation we also get together to play some virtual games,” he said.

“For my generation which did not learn technology while growing up, it is now surrounded by it. I have started conducting online classes for Chemistry and Biology for standard IX and X over Zoom for the past few months. Had it not been for the current situation I would have never learnt how to do so. With classes being online, I get to spend some extra time with my family and I have also involved my husband who helps me in tying out the question papers. It has also taught me a lot the pros and cons of the Internet,” said Kiran Mehra (69), retired Associate Professor, Chemistry Department Ranchi Women’s College.

Richa Patel - mother of a five year old girl feels that technology has made her daughter more independent when it comes to studying.

“My daughter has become so used to using the internet for her online classes that now she does not need my help while logging in or out or even to mute or un-mute the session. She and her classmates are also able to understand when the teacher has blocked them from talking during class. She is also able to access the website and see the homework assigned. I feel she will soon be able to upload it also all by herself.”
