The Special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Court on Tuesday ordered the release of RJD Chief Lalu Prasad’s passport deposited as part of bail condition after his conviction in a fodder scam case. Lalu through his advocate has knocked the door of CBI court for release of his passport as he had to visit Singapore for medical treatment.

Lalu’s counsel Prabhat Kumar said “Lalu Prasad is likely to travel to Singapore for his kidney treatment. The Court has allowed the release of his passport. He will get his passport by tomorrow (Wednesday). Our client will now apply for its renewal. After renewal, we would again deposit it with the court and apply for its release whenever he gets an appointment for treatment abroad,” he said. The passport of the RJD chief was confiscated by the CBI as he was found convicted in a fodder scam. Currently, Prasad is out on bail.

In April this year, Jharkhand high court granted bail to Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) supremo Lalu Prasad in the Doranda treasury case in which a CBI special court had sentenced him to five years in prison.

The 73-year-old Prasad was in custody following his conviction and sentencing by a CBI court in February in a fodder scam case involving embezzlement of over Rs 139 crore from Doranda treasury.

Lalu for the past few years has been suffering from several ailments including diabetics, blood pressure and kidney problems. In March this year when he was convicted in a fodder scam and lodged at RIMS ward, his condition worsened and he was later shifted to AIIMS for treatment.

A medical board of the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) here referred him to AIIMS New Delhi for better treatment. The medical board in its report had stated that Lalu’s createnine level has increased.  Blood sugar and blood pressure have been fluctuating. The sugar level is hovering between 150 and 200 mg/dl. The ebullient politician suffers from multiple ailments, including renal problems.  The kidney is functioning at 15-20 per cent capacity," report had said.
