In a bid to make night patrolling more effective, the Ranchi police have decided to use Global Positioning System (GPS) tracking chip in its patrolling vehicles. As a pilot project this system will be introduced across the city by the end of this month.
Ranchi SSP Prabhat Kumar told the pioneer that to ensure better policing in their jurisdiction that has registered a 15 per cent increase in serious crimes such as murder, robbery and dacoit in past few months they are going to install tracking chip in the patrolling vehicles for the city on pilot basis.
“The chip would help track the movement of patrolling vehicles in real time and improve efficiency in patrolling on city roads with a blend of latest technology,” added Kumar.
To start with, in as many as 20 patrolling vehicles this GPS chip will be installed by the end of this month. The chip will be directly linked with a web-based tracking system which officers of the rank Station House office and above by sitting in the control room will monitor the movement of the patrolling officer.
Notably, policemen on night patrol beat are required to inform their locations to the control room on wireless. Often, due to technical glitches the information is not communicated properly as a result of which the response time of the police emergencies increases.
“Tracking chip fitted vehicles would make it easy to ensure that the police reach places of accidents and provide relief measures to the accident victims during emergency. Moreover, if any motorcycle is found leaving its predetermined patrolling area, then immediately a SMS will be sent to SSP and city SP,” mentioned Kumar.
Besides, they can also identify the location of the distress caller if he or she calls the control room (100) from landline. Meanwhile, Bharat Sanchar Nigam limited (BSNl) Company will be providing the GPS chips for the patrolling vehicle to the Ranchi cops.
BSNl Ranchi General Manager (GM) Om Prakash said, “We have received the order of 20 GPS tracking chip by the Ranchi Police a month ago. Within couple of days the order will be delivered.” Meanwhile, City SP Anup Birtharey has said that if the project gains momentum then there are using the system in the remaining vehicles too.
looking at the increasing graph of crime in the city Ranchi Police are planning to increase the number of Shakti Vahan from three to five. SSP Prabhat Kumar informed that two more Shakti Vahan will be introduced in the city by next month after the completion of month-long Shravani Mela.
