Jharkhand Pradesh Congress Committee (JPCC) on Sunday demanded 27 per cent reservation for Other Backward Castes (OBCs) in jobs of the State Government.

Addressing a press meet at his residence, JPCC Chief Rameshwar Oraon said that the party has mentioned 27 per cent reservation for OBCs in the jobs of the State Government and during the last State Assembly election the party promised in every political rallies that if the party is voted to power then it will provide 27 per cent reservation to OBCs in jobs of the State Government.

“Other partner in coalition government, the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), also announced during their poll campaign that if the coalition is voted to power then it would give reservation to OBCs in the jobs of the State Government,” said Oraon, adding that the State should make provisions for such reservation at the earliest.

Before addressing the press meet the JPCC Chief talked on telephone to Congress Legislature Party Leader, Alamgir Alam on the issue and Alam gave his nod to demand reservation for the OBCs in the State Government. He said that like other States Jharkhand Government should also announce reservation for OBCs.

Oraon said that there is Supreme Court order that the reservation limit should not exceed 49.50 per cent but several other states like Haryana and Maharashtra State Governments are examples of states where reservation has exceeded from the limit. Jharkhand too can implement such reservation, he said.

“Earlier there was 14 per cent reservation given to OBCs in the State but the party thought that the reservation limit for the class should be increased. JPCC which is an alliance partner in the State Government is demanding after one and half year of formation of the State Government that it should immediately announce the reservation for the class in the State,” he added.

JPCC Spokesperson, Alok Kumar Dubey said that it was Congress Party which brought reservation in the Country for Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes and now the party is advocating for the reservation of OBCs in the State.

JPCC Spokesperson Lalkishore Nath Shadeo and Rajesh Gupta were also present on the occasion.
