Coming into defence of Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi, party national spokesperson Ajoy Kumar said that the leader was not there in the support of anti-national act committed at the JNU in Delhi. He, at the same time, also rejected the approach of the BJP on the issue of nationalism.
Addressing a Press conference on Tuesday, Ajoy Kumar termed Congress a greater nationalist party. “We don’t require to learn nationalism from such forces who have never contributed to the freedom struggle. Rahul Gandhi belongs to a nationalist party whose leaders like Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi have died for the country. He himself has made it clear that chanting anti-national slogans at the JNU on that fateful night was unacceptable but labeling the entire institution as anti-national is incorrect,” he said.
Rahul Gandhi, following the university’s February 9 incident, had shown his solidarity with the students. However, later the Gandhi scion had clarified that he was not for anti-nationals.
Kumar turned the head on the Centre and Delhi police for not being able to apprehend those involved in the sloganeering. “This is a clear cut case of their double speak. It was the Congress that executed Ajmal Kasab, Afzal Guru and Maqbul Batt. But they have not been able to arrest four students in six days! How would they defend the country,” questioned the spokesperson and also highlighted the reported cases of police atrocities taking place in Chhattisgarh against journalists and political activists.
