College campuses not safe for girls?

Published on:

The back to back untoward incidents within the college premises have exposed the colleges’ ailing security and fake assurance of the college administrations regarding security of girls within the campus.

The Ranchi Women’s College incident where a girl was beaten up inside the campus by boys of an adjoining hostel, and Marwari College’s recent incident, where an MBA student was manhandled and molested by four youths has aggravated fear psychosis among the female students. The students of Marwari College handed over a letter to SSP Bhimsen Tuti regarding this urging him to take concrete action in this direction. They have demanded to deploy police officials in a civil dress outside every city college and ensure that elaborate arrangements are made regarding security of the girls.

Meanwhile Tuti has assured to look into the matter seriously and has assured to leave no stone unturned in providing the women complete security. Interestingly, City SP Manoj Ratan has alleged the college administration for occurrence of untoward incidents within the premises. He said, “The college authority must keep a close eye at the entry and exit of people. The police officials can provide security outside the campus and not within the campus.”

He further added that the college authority should make elaborate arrangements for ensuring security of the students within the premises and should restrict entry of people without ID card. Moreover, a dress code should also be made mandatory for the students.

However, the college authorities feel that it is not possible for them to examine the security at personnel level. Marwari College Principal Ranjeet Singh said, “I have appointed watchmen for checking ID cards. Moreover, has placed CCTV cameras within the premise to monitor student’s movement. What can I do moreIJ”

He further added that it is not possible for a senior authority to personally keep an eye on everything. However, has assured to tighten up the security within the college premises to prevent the college from any further untoward incident. Echoing him, Gossner College Principal Dr S Ekka said, “I have instructed the guards to allow entry of only those students who carry ID card along with them and are planning to chair a meeting with the college authorities soon to discuss on other measures to be taken in this direction.”

Ironically, many a times security guards are found missing from college entry gates and they also find it difficult to stop people entering the campus due to lack of strong authority.
